MORSE OUT ON $10,000 BAIL.

Ploadcd Not Guilty to a Chargo_ of
Perjury.
NEW YORK Feb.18.—-Charles W.
Morse, the farther banker and steam-
ship company promoter, who yesterday
was indicted on a charge of perjury.
today entered a plea of not guilty to
the charge and was releasedon $10,000
ball. The perjury indictment grew
out of a loan of $100,000 to E. R. The
man concerning which Mr. Morse was
called before the jury as a witness.
it is charged that Thomas caused
a deposit of $50,000 of the funds of
the Provident Life Savings Assurance
Society of New York, to be made with
the National Bank of North America,
of which Morse was vice-president,
and that Morse then authorized the
bank to loan Mr. Thomas “00,000. Mr.
Morse is alleged to have at first testi-
fied before the grand jury that he did
not authorize the loan and then ad-
mitted that he did so.
Philip J, llrltt, counsel for Morse,
objected to the requirement of addi-
tional ball for Morse on the perjury
charge in court today. lie said: "Mr.
Morse is under $20,000 already. To
ask another 820.000 is in accordance
with the brutal and unreasonable con-
duct of the district attorney on Sun-
day, whcn he sent three detectives
down the bay to arrest in a sensation-
al and ostentatious manner a man who
had traveled 3,000 miles to surrender
himself."
The ball was furnished by the sure-
ty company which gave ball for Morse
yesterday.
MUTUAL LIFE'S ASSETS.
Largest Holder of New York, New Ha-
ven l. Hartford Railroad Stock.
NEW HAVEN, Feb. 18,—The annual
report of the Mutual Life insurance
Company, of New York, shown that it
is still probably the largest holder of
New York, New Haven and Hartford
Railroad stock, in which it has held
ings of 35,640 shares, returned at a
market value of 84,834,252: A list of
the New York, New Haven and Hart-
fd'rd stockholders about two years ago
showed that at that time the Mutual
Life Company held 36,640, having
therefore disposed of about. 1,000
shares In the interval. The next larg.
cat holder at that time was the Acme
Life Company. of Hartford, with 9,556
shares, the, Adams Express Company
with 8,850, and D. Ii. Wesson, oi
Springfield, with 6,679 shares.
The’New York Central road then
held 5,500 shares, the (loclet estate 5.-
137, and W. W. Astor 5,051 shares.
Since then the Aetna Life Company
has disposed of a large part of its bold
tags. At the some time the total hold-
ings of the twenty-live largest owners
of the stock was 128,678 shares, or
about 16 per cent. of the'total amount
of stock then outstanding.
