HARTFORD, Jan. 23.~Before a jury
in the Superior Court. yesterday the
trial of the somewhat celebrated titan-
by whitecapping case, so-aclled, was
begun; The plaintiff, Willis id. (iritiin.

Charles Alsbousa and eleven others for
injuries alleged to have been lccelved
at their hands in February. limb
While Griffin, the first witness was
testifying be interrupted the proceed-
ings to get permission to leave the
witness stand and takc medicine. He
told the court that he used chloroform
to ease his nervousness. He was es-
corted to the jury roonl where he sat-
urated a handkerchief with the solu-
tion and upon resuming the stand kept
the preparation in constant use.
He testified that as a result of the
alleged attack made upon him he Tc-
ceived terrible bruises about the body.
He claimed that one lib was broken‘
by the pressure of the knot of the rope
which he alleged encircled his waist;
that his right eye Was so injured that
it has been sightiess since; that his
left hip was so wrenched that he had
not recovered his normal use yet; that
seven of his teeth were knocked out
and that his nervous condition was
shattered.
The crossoexaminntion revealed that
there was a violent quarrel at the
home of Dr. Weed, where (irifiin was
boarding prior to the alleged assault.

ford, was shocked and seriously burn-
cd yesterday afternoon, while working
on the wires opposite the power house
in East Port Chester where the com-
