NEW YORK, .ilin. 17,—Mrs. Herbert
M. Sears, wife of a retired broker of
Bosttm, and a member of om- oi the
best known families of that. city. com-
mitted suicide by lumping from her
rooms on the thirteenth iloorol the
Hotel St. Regis this morning, while
temporarily insane. Her body fell
upon the roof of n Tour-story building
adjoining the hotel, and was terribly
crushed.
Mrs. Sears was thirty-seven years
old, and prior to the beginning of ill?
mental trouble which resulted In her
suicide, occupied a position of consid-
erable prominence in the social cir-
cles of Boston, her home. being on Com-
monwealth avenue in the most. fashion-
able district. For nine years she had
been suffering from a nervous disorder
and at intervals during that time. she
came to New York for treament by
Dr. Joseph Collins. The latter said
today that in October, 1906, Mrs. Sears
seemed to have recovered her health.
and In April, 1907, by his advice, took
a trip to Europe. She returned with
her health apparently fully restored.
About two weeks ago, Dr. Collins said.
he advised both Mr. and Mrs. Sears
that she should come to this city and
mulls for two weeks of treatment,
intended to prevent a recurrence of
her old trouble. Mrs. Sears came to
New Yorkl‘nine days ago. and occupied
a suite of rooms in the St. Regis, be-
ing accompanied only by her maid.
Under the physician's directions,tbe
treatment was resumed. Dr. Collins
last saw her about :30 o'clock last
evening. when he ca led at. the hon-l.

she said that n masseuse was clini-
lng to 'give her a massage last. night.
The doctor said she mined In normal
condition, and gave no indication of
any desperate renown. Her nervous
disorder had privviously taken the form
of melancholic. and Dr. Collins said to-
day that he supposed she sullered a re
currence of one of these attacks dur-
ing last evening. and Jumped irorn the
window while in s It or temporary in-
sanity.
Mrs, Sears' maid had a room sdloin-
illg that of her Mistress last night, and
knew nothing of her action until told
of it by the hotel employes after death.
