Submitted to the Nervvaiit Board of
Councilmen, Last Night.
The following is the report which
Chief Engineer Thomas sent to the
Norwalk Council. last night:
To the Honorable Mayor and City
Council:
In submitting my annual report as
chief engineer of the Norwnlk Fire De-
partment, i have nothing but praise for
the unicorn of the department. They
have at all times given me encourage-
ment and support and treated myself
and assistants with uniform courtesy.
During the, year from December lat,
i908, to December 1st, 1907, the de-
partment has answered thirty schn
alarms. twenty were still alarms and
seventeen were no: calls.
The department itself is in good
shape and should need but little in the
way of supplies during the year out:
side of the regular musing necessities.
There is one matter that is bound to
come up and that Is the condition of
affairs at Hope Hose quarters.
We have an excellent chemical nntiit
and seven hundred and fifty feet of
tire hose on the Phaeniu wagon for
instant use Tho Hope Hose wagon,
as you know. owing to the present ar-
rangementll. dose not arrive at a tire
. until horses can he sent from the liv-
ery stable and harnessed at Hope Hose
quarters. This many times causes
dangerous delays which might be a
costly experiment if a blaze had so
cured suincient headway. Two or more
stream of water will do more effect~
lve work. in ten minutes after 5 dan-
gerous or.» starts. than twenty streams
after a delay of fifteen or twenty min-
utes. That this is a fact can be eas-
ily proven by the perusal of the re
ports of any of the Fire Chiefs in the
larger cities, where matters or this
kind are kept track of in detail
