DEFENSE OF DRAWTENDER COLE.

Please allow me to correct what
seems to have been a wrong impres-
sion or statement. in regard to Bridge-
tonder Cole's trying to collect flve
cents from each person passing across
the property of the town. as appeared
in Monday's issue of The Sentinel I
wish to state that it is positively un-
true, both in word and act. We be-
lieve Mr. Cole to have been unjustly
represented and unjustly dealt with
Mr. Cole did not object Vto people
crossing the tom: property r even
his own private dock which a built
at his own expense. and which has
nothing to do with the town property,
and which it was necessary for them
to do in order to reach the ferry; also
the stairs that‘ Mr. Cole built for hisd
own private use at his own expense.
Mr Cole simply objected to Mr. Van
Alstyne's boat monopolizlng the ter-
ry. and trying to drive other boats
out, which had the same right to the
ferry, which they tried to 'do. Mr.
Cole, who for the past eighteen years
has served lathe capacity of draw
tender and bridge carpenter, has nev-
er neglected duty or taken a vacation,
but has ever been ready to respond
Whenever duty called. He has also
done the repairing and planking of
the bridge, which no other tender
has done. but for which the town had
to pay extra at the rate at $2. 50 to 33
a day, besides repairs on the house
and. other property of the town, to
lthe ambunt of several hundred dol-
lars. for which he has never received
compensation, having but a short time
ago rais d uptthe house and replank-
ed the ounditlons, for which he re-
ceived only his regular wages as
drawtender. it seems to me that not
only taxpayers. but the selectmen
should consider these things in the
interests of the town and taxpayers,
rather than being biased by a few
who deem themselves of so much con-
sequence that the town could not run
