dents do occur, but that more acci-
dents do not occur.
Concerning the use of brakes the
foot brake which, as a rule, acts on
the car-dun shaft or countershoft, Is
in general too much used and the hand
brake not enough. I was in a car re-
cently In which the driver was accus-
tomed to use his foot brake only, hard-
ly ever using his hand brake. In going
through Cavendish square the foot
brake failed to .work at a critical Ino-
ment. and the car collided with a
four~whccler. luckily doing no damage
The driver. however, was afterward-
thoroughly nervous and uncomfortable
for he had never driven with his hand
brake which was badly adjusted and
was not really effcient for the purpose
