Three New Haven Girls Locked
Up in Newark After Corres~
penitence and Travel
A romance that had its beginning
in a box of candy had a sad ending in
Newark, N .T., yesterday, when three
young girls. ranging in ages from 14
to 17. were arrested by the police.
They are being held pending advices
from their parents.
The girls are Mildred Richardson,
'17: her fourteen- year-old sister, Pearl,
of 21.1 Ferry street. New Haven. Conn”
and Jennie Kinney, .14 years old, of iii
Summer Place New Haven. The 31118
were employed in the confectionery
store of Bradley & Smith. They con-
ceived the idea of incloslng their
names and addresses in boxes of can-
dy which were made up by them and
shipped to various parts of the coun-
try.
When one day Mildred Richardson
received a. letter from Frederick Kraft,
11 pretzel baker, of 899 Fairmount ave.~
uue, Newark. N. .l., she answered,
telling the writer that. site would be
1.111111 to meet. hill). The correspondence
continued. and one day last week
Kraft wrote to the girl that he would
like to see her. but could not get away.
The girl decided to make the meeting
possible, and left her home on Mon-
day. accompanied by the two other
girls.
As the trio were leaving New i-ln-
you they were seen by Frank Dowd.

youth who was interested in the Kin-
ney girl.

sult that. he. boarded the smile boat
and continued on to Newark.
0n the way one of the girls told him
that, they were running away from
home. lie followed the girls to Kraft’B
home, which was reached late on
Wednesday afternoon. Kraft seemed
to be surprised by the girls' visit.
They were received by Mrs. Kraft, the
baker‘s mother, and were invitod to
spend the night there.
Ilowd was persistent and without
food or sleep continued to guard the
Kraft home until yesterday. when. he-
eoming Weary of his self-appointed
task, be notified the police. The ar-
rest of the girls followed.
Kraft went to the police station
and told sergeant McGovern all about
the affair. ,The girls will be held by
the policel until called for by their
relatives. Dowd said that his interest
in the Kinney girl was due. to the fact.
that he was a friend of her aunt.

Charges alleging conduct unbecom-
ing an oliicer and a gentleman have
been made at the Navy Department
against Chaplain Harry W. Jones, who
holds the rank of commander and was
recently attached to the battleship
Minnesota. it is alleged in the.
charges that the chaplain has been
negligent in the payment. of his pe-
cuniary obligations. There is some-
thing else.
Chaplain Jones saw an advertlnc‘
ment ill the. personal column of a New
York paper wherein 11 woman solicited
correspondence with a gentleman
whose qualifications Wore enumer-
died. He. made haste to write that he
felt. that be filled the bill entirely.
Then. to make his case strongor he
added that be closely resembled The-
micro Roosevelt, president of the
United States, not only in general 111)-
penrance. so that persons sometimes
mistook one for the. other. but that he
possessed the marked characteristics,
