rible Disease.

sick when taken to the hospital and
they came from the different wards of
the city, Including the tenth, and one
was brought here from Torrington for
treatment.
There have been about thirty deaths
of babies thus [or III the month of
August, from cholera infaniuln alone.
as compared with twenty-twu deaths

last year from this disease.
There Is a tendency to the develop-
ment of pneumonia in many kinds of
sickness, but there Is an unusual nnnr
her of cases of the disease this month,
for which no good reason Can be given.
FIRE AT BROAD RIVER SCHOOL.
Discovered In the Nickcf Time by
Principal Walkiey.
What might have been a very disas-
trous fire in Broad Itivcr, was pre-
vented yesterduy afternoon by the
timely and fortunate appearance of
Principal Shaiicr ll. Walkley, of the
school.
Mr. Walkiey. who is employed by
Frank ll. Merrill, during the summer,
decided to, quit. work earlier than us-
ai yesterday, and as he came up to
the school building on his way home,
he noticed flames in the rear of the
school house. lie at once set to work
extinguishing the. blaze, which was
then climbing up the outside cellar
door.
There are several houses in close
proximity to the school building; and
no doubt the timely discovery of the
lire save these, as well as the school
from destruction, as there Is no [nouns
of fighting lire in that. locality.
How the. flames started Is not
known, but it. is surmised that they
began from a match or cigarette
:urlcssly dropped in the. dry grass by
someone on the grounds.
