editorial in the Hartford Courant. He
spoke as follows:
The intimation that I ever solicited
the assistance of Mr. Mellon In the

for no other purpose than to make my
protest as a citizen and a senator oi’
the state against the interference of
agents of the New Haven road In the
assignment of senate chairmanships—
a function which I believed should be
exercised by the members of. the Son-
ate alone. I made my protest against
the continuance of the objectionable
practice of past administrations of the
New Haven road of permitting Its
henchmen to set 111) its bargain coun-
ter at Hartford on Senate chairman-
ships at each session of the legisla-
ture, a practice that had become a
stench in the. nostrils of decent men.
My voice and votes upon public mea-
sures are said to have been influenc-
ed by these pernicious activities of
the legislative agents of the road in
the organization of the Senate. This
Is also untrue. 1 would treat the New
