Big Flag Pole Scattered About
the Lawn, but House Escapes
Damage ‘
In one. of the hardest electrical
showers of the present summer, "The
Folly," the residence of Dr. Carl A.
iia1strom, in Prospect avenue, Nor-
walk was struck by lightning about
4: 15 o’clock this morning.
A tall flag pole surmountlng the ca-
pola was rent and torn into a thous-
and bits and scattered about theilawn
by the bolt. That the house, itself,
was saved from serious damage, Dr.
I‘larstrom attributes entirely to the
presence of a copper lightning red. It
is supposed that the shaky ilnld leap-
,ed from the flag pole to the lightning
rod, the prongsvof which were melted.
and finally found its way to the ground.
Dr Harstrom's family was aroused
by the heavy shack and fearing that
the house was aii1e, Dr H111strom
made a quick investigation after the
ball which had been attached to the
flag pole was discovered Imaging by
the halyards of the latter. The hasty
examination showed that there was
no tire.
A peculiar circumstance in connec-
tion with the occurrence was the fact
that the bolt of lightning went clearly
through the center of the flag staff.
This was shown by the scorched con-
dition of a section of it.
The electric lights in the house and
the telephone antiwtho ’phone at. Mrs.
M. E, Meud’s Hillside School were put
out or commission.
When Dr. Harstrom's home was re-
modeled a year ago he insisted that
the lightning rod be replaced and sev-
eral of his iriendshad doubted the 11d-
visabillty of such‘a proceeding. Dr.
Harstrom is now a more ardent advo
cute than ever of the lightning rod and
ascribes the saving of the house from
serious damage to this agency. He
says this was a clear demonstration
of its worth.
When .ihe belt of lightning wrecked
the flag staff on Dr, I-larstrom‘s resi-
dence early this morning nearly all of
the residents of the City of Norawik
were awakened.

Someone Tried to Ditch a Train Load
of Veterans at Gardiner, Me.
GARDINER. hie. July 0.—-Railroad
and police officials are investigating
two attempts to wreck the passenger
train on the Kcnnebec Central narrow
gauge railroad. which runs between
this city and the National Soldiers'
Home at Togas. The efforts were
made yesterday when about 250 of
the veterans passed over the line
twice on their way to this city and
return for their annual excursion to
the mouth of the Kenncbcc river.
The engineer on the morning trip
discovered a sleeper placed across"tl1e
track and stopped his train barely in
time to avoid it. In the afternoon Su-
pcrlnicndcnt 11‘. A. Lawton and special
track walkers found a hundcar “skid“
across the tracks and a. wooden wedge
driven under the rail in such a way
that It would have hit. the car wheel
flanges 11nd derailed the train.
The road ls built at such a crude
