A pamphlet compiled by Tax Com-
missioner William H. Corbin gives
some interesting nformation on the
manner in which ome oi? the towns
or the state lay their taxes and collect
them. Forty-eight of the towns claim
to make a. valuation of 100 per cent.
Other towns vary, and the lowest is In
Watertown, thirty for milnutuctories
and sixty for other property.
Tax Commissioner Corbin secured
his information by mailing blanks
containing questions to be answered
by town officials. The questions asked,
number of assessors, the number of
days they are obliged to work. the
number revulued during the year, the
poll taxes, and the per cent. of as-
sessed value to actual value. Boards
of relief were. questioned as to num-
ber of reductions mode, number of
days worked and compensation. Tax
collectors were questioned concerning
number of working days, onipensn-
iion, amount uncolleeted, nd poll
and military taxes uncoliected. Town
clerks were asked to give the grand
list for the past year, the exemptions
and the tax rate.
