An interesting controversy over a
parcel of land in the vicinity of Point
Judith breakwater is now going on be.-
twecn the United States government
and Jeremiah 1’. Robinson. or rather
Mrs. Jeremiah l’. Robinson. as the
land stands in the latter-’s name. if
there is any one Itian who more than
any other is responsible for the Point
Judith breakwater it is Jeremiah 1’.
Robinson; He. has worked for it in
season and out of season, and has been
up against all kinds of opposition. anti
whether or not. the breakwater is it
good thing or a bad thing Jeremiah 1’.
Robinson comes pretty near beliig res-
ponsible for It,
The Robinsons own a lot of Point
Judith laud anti Jeremiah P. has al-
ways had an idea that sooner or later
there would be a. metropolis or sortie-
thing akin to it on Rhode Island's
ocean front. lie has talked of a free
port being there, connected with a
railroad. and. for that matter, he al-
ready lias a state charter for a rail-
road to the Point, which. at least. is
one evidence of metropolis evolu-
tion. The breakwater may be consid-
ered to be another.
But while the breakwater has pro-
greased despite the varied kinds of up
position. here comes the government
with a new idea Which was not includ-
ed in Mr. Robinson’s plan. This idea
involves nothing less than the taking
over of the Robinson land by the gov-
ernment. And it is here. that Mr. Rob»
lnson and llll‘ government. have
clashed so seriously that they have
gone to court about it. and the mat
ter is now in the iiands of a commis-
sion headed by Judge Mumford Mr
Robinson isn’t so sure that if the gov
crnment takes the. land all idea of ii
Point Judith port vanishes; in fact it.
believes that. properly handled it can
be worker] oitt in any event. if the
government wants his land of course
he cannot prevent. its acquisition. but
it's over the question of price that ilIc
controversy has arisen.
Mr_ Robinson claims that the build
ing of the breakwater makes it possi-
ble to construct from his land the only
available pier capable of accommodat-
ing vessels drawing 22 feet of water
anywhere on the western shore front
of Rhode island and that that kind of
land is worth good money. it is the
sort of land which he. considers should
be bought by the foot._ while it is no
dcrstood that the government peoph
talk about paying so much an acre
It is understood that Mr. Robinson but
said something about letting the land
go for 830.000. but to this the govern
ment folks turned a deaf ear.
The commissloncts went to the Point
one day last week and looked ”it

they found the breakwater Mr. Rubin
son says they ‘found the breakwater.
metaphorically speaking. in his back
yard. or In other words, on ills ground
for there it. was high and dry attached
to the shore. And now he wants to

It. Is on his land and It got there with-
out liis permission. He isn‘t claiming
tho breakwater. he says. but it‘s on his
land anti being there it adds to the
value of it. He. . doesn't want. the
breakwater. and perhaps he might let
the government. take it away if it
wants to. although he hasn't said so.
Yet the existence of the. breakwater
has made a number of things possible
and they all spell valiic, hence. he
doesn't want to part with the. land on
an Icreuge valuation.
Access to the breakwater by land is
only possible through the Robinson
properly. therefore It. is desirable that
part. of this prflopeli) should be owned
by the goveiiIIIIt-nt. lint whether lllt'

the. possibilities and value of the tract
from the point of view of Mr. Robinson
or that of the government engineers
is an outcome. that is awaited with In-

owns the breakwater which Mr. Robin
