NEW YORK, May ":5 .—An investi-
gation by the Postoflice Department of
the charges made by Mrs. Howard
Gould who is seeking a separation
from her husband, Howard Gould, that
her mail was tampered with for
months, will be made. if Mrs. Gould
furnishes the department with the lot-
tcrs, which Mrs. Gould informed Po»
lice Commissioner llingham yesterday
afternoon had been apparently open-
ed and tracings made of the. addresses.
Mrs. Gould is quoted as saying to
Commissioner llingham that last suin-
mer she noticed that the until she re.-
celved had been tampered with and
that tracings had been made of the
addresses. A friend oi‘ Mrs. Gould.
who was present when Mrs. Gould
made her statement to Commissioner
Blngham. said:
“Whether Mrs. Gould was in town
or not, it made no differenceoher

sent to her never reached her hands.

she saw the blur of the tracing imper
or where an attempt had been made
to take an impression of the writing
of the sender by means of copying pa-

ed today that they had no official
knowledge of the charges made by
Mrs. Gould, and as the affairs of Mr.
and Mrs. Gould were of a civil char-
acter they Would take no notion in the.
limiter unless Mrs. Gould produced

plaint.

of the New York postal district, said
today:
"If Mrs. Gould will furnish us the
letters we will make an investigation
as in all similar cases. The. depart.
merit takes no cognizance of charges
made that the mail was tampered with
in civil cases unless the charges are
brought officially to our intention. No
application has been made for tracings
of the addresses on Mrs. Gould‘s mail.
either in this city or atSands Point.

KIEV, Russia, May 25.——-Bands of
several hundred peasants, armed with
scytbes, axes and shotguns, attacked
the estate of Count Shuvaloff yester-
day. After several hours' fighting
they were dispersed by mounted Cos-
sacks. The peasants left twenty men
