been levelled at the rivers and harbors
bill. The enormous growth 0; water-
way transportation in this country has
practically compelled the government
to recognize its importance. As 1111 ii-
lustration of the enormous amount of
freight carried by water, it is only ne-
cessary to point to the traffic on the
Great lakes. which during the season
of navigation last year reached a total
of more than 237,000,000 tons. The
Ohio River altme carried 111.000.0011
tons of various classes of commodities,
principally coal.
rivers and harbors measure warrants
an expenditure of more than $10,000.-
000 for improvements to the harbors
and channels of the Great Lakes This
might almost be called a parsimonious
amount. when it is known that the bar-
bore of Duluth and Superior during the
