hawkii seeh To many the variety of
hawk was unknown and they were re-
lerred to members of the local Bird
Club for’ identification, and entails a
very Interesting phenomena.
The hawk family is hard to know.
because the most. of them are wary.
and mostly seen when circling high in
air. or else when caught. stealing a
chicken and hence we. hear so often
the expression "hawks are hawks"
The commtiu, high. circling "hawk is
the red- ahetildeted variety and rarely
a red ta‘ll hawk, with flight so like as
to be mistaken for the above nunied.
These‘ two are commonly known as
"chicken hawks." yet the government
reports prove that very little damage
done to poultry can be laid to their
door and their value in keeping down
small rodents and snakes far out but
ant-cs any harm they may do.
The cooper’s and sharp-tall hawks
are smaller, ilying'more within the
trees and do most of the damage done
and have brought dlsgrncc upon the
whole hawk family. until the farmer's
boy thinks he has done the community
h "-‘mctll in killing a red shouldered
(chicken) hawk, whereas did he know
the bird better he would have stayed
his gun.
As is well knownftha song birds mi-
grate at. night in immense flocks. while
the hawks migrate by day, and when
one sees the numbers of hawks gather-
ed in one of'tbeae flights. the first ques-
tion Is. where do they all come froth.
To account for the number of hawks
seen last week there was a wonderful
“flight" lusting all day Monday and
two hours on Tuesday, the bulk of the
birds going north of us, and no doubt
those seen and killed in the woods
were strugglers, One experienced ob-
server. working on Greenfield Hill,
tells me that at any time on Manda},
from five to fifty hawks could be seen
at any time. anti the strange part was
all \vcre flying In a straight northerly
direction. Stranger still. the flocks
were composed entirely of large hawks
‘rcd tails and goshnwks. and it was the
latter variety of bird which the writer
saw and Identified. The goshawk
breeds to tinI north of us. comihg
down in the fall and winter and is the
wickcdest hawk known. So hold is
he that they have been known to take
it chicken from almost at n man's feel
and so swift of flight as to be out. of
reach almost before the astonished per-
son could collcct himself. The old
birds have a bluish slate colored back.
with blackish llcad, with grayish. wavy
bars. on a white ground, on the llllili‘l
parts, and In from 20 to 26 inches in
length. Young birds are very differ-
ent. lacking the blue and the navy cf-
fcct. and hard to distinguish from the
young of the red-tail and rcdshouldcr-
cd variety. Those who saw last
week’s flight will not soon forget it and
may never so» its like again over Nor-
wnlk. and to them these notes may be
of interest.
