celved iiity American sailors from the
warships now at Naples. The party
which was conducted to Rome by
Chaplain McGinnity, of the cruiser
West Virginia, was presented to the
pontiff by Mgr. Kennedy rector of the
American College here. The pope
gave each of the men his hand to
kiss and delivered a short address,
which was translated by Mgr. Kenne-
dy. urging the sailors to be loyal to
their religion and country, faithful in
their performance of their duties and
obcidient to their superiors. At the
conclusion of the audience. the pon-
tiff bestowed the apostolic benediction
on the sailors and caused each or
them to be presented with a souvenir
medal. When the pope left he was
heartily cheered by the visiting Ame-
rlcans The sailors were photograph-
