NEW YORK. August 9.—-A strike of
several hundred men employed as
deckhands. alien and firemen on rail-
road tugboats in this harbor badly tied
up the railros dtughoat iieet today.
This in turn precented the movement
or a large amount of freight from the
railroad terminals in Jersey City to
Manhattan. Nearly all the railroads
maintaining fleets of tugs and lighters
were attested by the strike. including
the Erie. Baltimore and Ohio and the
New York Central. Sixty men em-
ployed on the docks or the Erie Rall-
road In Jersey City struck in sympa-
thy with the tugboat employees. All
of the men have been receiving on an
average or $55 a month suddenlsnd
Should the strike be preloaded it is
expected that hundreds of carioads oi
‘tood supplies for this city will be tied
up, as a large percentage bill is light-
ored to the city and the railroad tugs
do the towing. ,
A meeting has been arranged to take
place today between ofiicers oi the
railroads and the committee at the
striking employees to discussihe plea-
tiou of wages. '
