AN OLD MURDER REGALLED.
Since the murder of poor old Scllnck
Dunn. on the outskirts of New Canaan.
a few weeks ago, people of that. town
are speaking of it as a parallel case
with the Sclleck murder which occur-
red there about 38 years ago, and it
is generally thought that the murdcr
of 1906 will pass into history as did the
one of 1873~a perfect mystery. While
the particulars péihie under are all

dents. there are few of the present gen-
eration who have more than simply
heard of this case. From the Stam-
ford Advocate wc reprint the follow-
ing particulars of the brutal murder
of Sarah Scllcck. a widow:
It is to be hoped the rumors of de-
icclivc discoveries in connection with
the recent peculiarly repulsive murder
in._rurnl New Canaan are going to
amount to something real and tangible

cruel crime. Ff nothing comes of the
efforts which are presumably lit-lug
put forth to find the guilty party, it
will not be the first time the machin-
ery of he law has been utterly bathed
in the very same locality some three.

of the state offered $2.000 reward. The
town of New Canaan offered first 3500
and later $1.000, making in all rewards
totaling 83.500. Not a cent of the re-
wurd liionoys were ever paid. for the
very good u-asnu flint nobody ever
established a claim on them by finding
the murderer, who to this day, if he
lives. goes uuwhippcd of justice, so far
as buuuin law is concerned. We re-
fer to the tragedy of November 19.

er known. At all events late on the
morning of the 19th, Mrs. Sarah Scl-
lcck. an elderly widow living alone.
was found to have been murdered with
an axe and then set on, fire. The
whole canintry side was excited about
it at the time and for months after-
wards~lhe idea of a lone. helpless
woman cruelly butchered by some hu-
man suvagc. naturally carrying a
strong appeal to the Imaginations and
symapthlus of the people. A son of
the victim who had been away went
for years and was back about three
weeks, was under suspicion for a time.
but it was proved he wasn't near the
house first night. A man named
George liullock was arrested on sun
plcion, but nothing could be proved
against him at the coroner‘s inquest
which was first adjourned to December
and then to January when the jury
rendered a verdict of ”narrowed by
parties unknown.” This was not the
last of it. however. in the following
nionth one Henry Willis was arrested
and there was a long justioos‘ trial in
New Canaan: at which the principal
