lty will feel interested in the follow—
ing historical letter relating to the
capture of Rev. Mather and members
of his congregation in 1781 in the Con-
gregational Church at Burton:
in the month of July, the 21st. day.
1781, a party of Twins, about 39 Ill
number. passed over the Sound from
Lloyd Marks, on a Saturday night, and
lay in ambush, about the shore of Dar-
Ien till the people assembled in the
meeting-house the ai’rteuoon of the
next. day, Jilly 22. Soon after worship
began, while the congregation was
singing. the enemy was first seen
jumping over ll stone fence, about four
rods from the front of the meeting
house. One young man named Issac
Richards. who was standing with his
face toward the trout door. first saw
them, and cried out, “There comes the
enemy" and be instantly escaped by
springing out of a window and running
up the back road. The ’i‘ories fired
several musket. at him, but. failed to
