Oats are the favorite food for horsos.,llceause of several qual-
ities. They contain more nitrogenous matter than the other
grains. their nutrients are combined In the best ratio. they are
more digestible; for a steady diet the horse appreciates them
better than any other feed.
And now-~them are oats and oats. iood oats are clean,
hard, dry. sweet and plump berry. The. weight is a very important
matter. Thirty-two poundst-onstitum a legal bushel. but good
oats weigh more, we have them over 40 pounds to the measured
bushel. Six quarts of the heaviest. will weigh as illiif‘li as a peek
of the lightest and therefore contain almost a third more nutri-
ment, quart. for quart; so it is evidently a matter of no small
economy to buy the heavier grain.
The age of oats is a very important consideration.
New oats are indigestible and liable to give colic. They
ought never to be fed when less titan three months old. and are
at their best. when a year old. We have oats with all these
requisites, better buy sutiiclcnt quantity to last until new oats
are ill to feed.
