Health Officers Concerned Over the
Possibility of Epidemic.
The health authorities and the phy-
sicians of Hartford and other parts of
the. state are not. a little concerned
about the unusual prevalence of ty-
phoid fever. This period of the year
Is known as the time when typhoid fe;
ver is in season. but as far as Incal
conditions are concerned. there Is
more of the dreaded disease III this
city and vicinity than for several years
previous. The. monthly bulletin of
the state. board of health for August
shows that 260 cases of the disease
were reported by the health officers oi”
l’tl towns. so that the disease existed
in about one-third of the towns of the
state.

as to lend to the conviction flint the
disease is epidemic there. or at least
approaching that There were this
week 21 cases in the Hartford hospl~
tal. and 19 In St. Francis hospital It

typhoid fever to require hospital treat

ford. About one half the number in
the Hartford hospital are from snr
rounding towns and of those in St.

ford. five from East Hartford and five

The disease is quite prevalent In the
southern and westh II parts of the city,
but singularly enough thdre! are no
cases so for this month in the north
or cast sections of the. city. with the
exception of one street a littleIeast of
Main street. The officials of the board
of health and local physicians cannot
account for this and there is no known
reason why the disease should exist in
certain parts of the city and not III
others. It. often happens that people
come back from their vacations with
typhoid in their anatomy which derel-
op afler their return. and sometimes
the source of the. Infection can be frac-
ed. This does not nppcaI to be one of
the conditions just now. for people
who have been home all summer and
haven’t got worn out weak and phy
sicnlly debilitated through strenuous
life at the seaside, III the country and
in the mountains this summer are af-
fected with the disease. Investiga-
tions are in progress by the officials
of the board of health and physicians
who are inquiring Into local conditions
where. the disease exists. such as the
milk. water and ice supply. and the
drainage. but so for noIloeal condi-
tions have been discovered which no
count for the prevalence of the. dis-
ease.
Already this month 40 cases of ty-
phoid fever In Hartford have been re,-
portcd to the board of health Of
these five are from outside the city
