Circle.
Star of Columbia Circle held its reg-
ular meeting last night, in Red Mons
Hail. Samuel Olmstead was duly ad-
mitted as an honorary member. There
were four applications for member-
ship. The attendance was one of the
largest the Circle has ever hud.prln-
cipally to welcome Mrs. Tobey, who
has Just returned from attending the
convention in New York City.
The first gift was a beautiful bou-
quot of flowers presented by Mrs.
Harry Reihl, for which Mrs. Tobey
thanked the donor In a most gracious
manner. Then the grandest surprise
of all was the most beautiful oak
rocker that could be purchased of A.
J. Collins. This was presented by
Mrs. Jondreau and Mrs. Purcuplle, in
behalf of Star of‘Columbla Circle.
The surprise was so great that Mrs.
Tobey was almost overcome. and could
only say that she was utterly at a loss
for words to express her thanks, but
would add that front the bottom of her
heart she thanked the Companions one
and all. Then she was invited to
occupy the chair and secure the much
needed rest required from the labor-
ious duty attached to the supreme
convention. At the close of the meet-
ing, ice cream and cake were served
and in all a most enjoyable evening
was spent.
Mrs. Tobey being one of the most
earnest workers of Star of Columbia
Circle, the members planned a grand
surprise during her absence at the
convention. Nothing was overlooked
to show her how she is appreciated by
all the members. She is the Chief
Companion of the Circle, being electcb
three consecutive times to the office.
She is also a Past Chief Commander.
and is deputy of Star of Westport Clr~
cle, of which she is the organizer.
The committee. on the affair was
composed of Companions Jondreau,
Pureupile. West, 'Dnuchey. Lyle, Blake,
Reihl, Walters, Nell. Kennedy.

walk Town Epworth League Union
will be held this evening at the West-
port M. E. Church. The entertaining
chapter will furnish. refreshments. and

RALSTON TOOK POISON.
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 22.—In the
case of Architect Ralston, .Ir., of Bos-
ton, who died under sensational cir.
cumstunces last week. the coroner's
jury yesterday rendered a verdict that
death resulted from poison taken with
suicidal intent. The jurors believe
the poison to have been cyanide of po-
tassium. The conduct of the proprie-
tors of the, restaurant. wherein Rnlston
took the poison and Chief Hospital

an unsettling effect on the opening
dealings in stocks here today. Some
stocks made headway against this in-
fluence, but the majority was lower.
A decline of a point in Canadian Pa-
cific was the most conspicuous change.

orders swept away all opposition, and
the market ran off about 1-2 below
yesterday’s closing. St. Patti reacted
a point from its opening and Great
Northern pith, Illinois Central, Con—
solidated Gas and Colorado and Son-
thern second pfd. sold 1 to 1 M be-
low yesterday. ' Particular stocks.

on the part of Marshall and another
witness. A cattle dealer alleged that
he overheard a conversation between
Marshall and another man during
which Watt. was threatened. The evi-
dence of the cattleman was taken at
this stage so as to allow him to pra-
ceed to Canada.
The prosecution called I barkeapor.
nicknamed "Nosey, " who testified that
Watt gave him money to buy clitoris
form with which to bill In. Watt.
The prisoner was again remanded.
