The house warming of Volunteer
Hook and Ladder Company held last
evening, at. their newly erected house
in Noroton was a very swell affair,
and firemen front all around were
present to enjoy the hospitality of the
Volunteers in their new home. The
house" is complete in every respect,
and well suited to its needs. The low-
er floor is devoted to the storage of
the apparatus of the company, and the
upper floor for a meeting roomll
for social diversions in all roll is
the place is well equipped. A fine
program was rendered in the enter-
tainment line, songs, recitations and
other diversions serving to pass away:
the evening very pleasantly in spite
of the unpleasant weather outside.

A. B. Brady was born in Norwalk.
Fairii'eid county Connecticut, March
27,1825, and previous to coming to
California was engaged in the whole-
sale grocery business. In 1849 in
company with twenty-five other hardy
young men he sailed on the bark Phoe-
nix from New York for the land of
gold. bringing a complete sawmill
pleat. After an adventurous voyage
they reached Saw Francisco. Septem-
ber 17 of that year. The party shorted
up a mill at Bonlcla. but In 1860 pull-
ed up and located at Marysviiie, where
the sycamores were cut up into him-
her. Later Mr. Brady prospector! near
Auburn. Little York and Rough and
Ready were neat visited followed by
Gold Run. near Nevada City.
In the fall of 1850 he went to Feat-h-
on River and in three weeks'took out
09,100 in gold. That same fail he came
toIGrass Valley.

place, which he continued to make his
home. in 1853 he engaged in the grm
cery business on Main street, doing
a good business. In 18561115 erected
buildings on Mill street. but lost them

The firm was Edwards & Brady. In
1859 they sold out‘ to John and Peter
Johnson and Mr. Brady went to Bear
River, ‘paid $1,500 for an interest in a
claim and made his money back in
three weeks so 'plentlful was gold
along ils books. He then bought his
partner out, but made nothingiout of
the balance of the claim. in 1860 he
returned to Grass Valley and became
'sutmrintetrdent of a company running
.1 tunnel on Deer Creek In the spring
of 1861 he bought a quarter interest
in the gas works here, with ill. Mc-
inughlln now a banker of San Jose.
He continued as superintendent of the
plant until 1804 when he became so-
perintendent oi the Rocky Bar mine.
disposing of the gas works in 1867.
He then started up the New York Hill
continuing to work it until 1870. Later
he was engaged with the Eureka Min-
ing company. in 1871 he opened an
insurance office in this city, continuing
in it until 1880. That year he started
the Boston Mining Company on Wolf
Creek on a two years lease. in 1882
he started up the Powlng mine.
in 1889 Mr. Brady was elected re-
corder of this county on the Demo-
erotic ticket being re- e-lectcd in 1890.
He also served several terms as a
unity trustee of Grass Valley. A few
years ago he retired from active busi-
ness and lived his last years quietly,
surrounded by a host of old friends.
During his life he was prominuit in
Masonic circles. being a member of
the Blue Lodge, chapter and Nevada
Commandery, having been master and
high priest in the latter.

Clara M. Compton. a native of Havana.

Brady is new in ew York. with the
Wells-Fargo and ililam it a resident
of Long Beach, this state. in addition
to the wife and children named two
brothers, George and Steven. and two
sisters, Mrs if. Montgomery and
Mrs. 1.thqu Jackson. are left. The
brothers and sisters are all residents
of Norwalk. Conn, but for some time
{at Mr and Mrs. Montgomery have
it here on a visit to the family.
