Italian laborers employed by Con-
tractor Edilnlno Chioppa, of Westport,
who have been , doing considerable
blasting in Hamilton avenue. in an
excavation being made so that Fran-
cis Lemongelli may erect a couple of
houses there, did some very strenu-
ous blasting, yesterday afternoon, and
terrorlned the entire neighborhood.
- On Saturday a blast was inserted in
at hole which they had drilled in the
rock. but for some reason it did not
explode and was left alone. Yester-
day other charges were inserted near
the dead one andafter all had been
made ready the electric battery was
attached, and the men sought cover.
. What was their surprise when, in-
stead of one blast, two went off. Only
one had been covered with a blanket
of logs chained together to prevent
dying stones and the result was a tre-
mendous explosion. which filled the
air'for hundred of yards with flying
stones and debris. When the stone
had all come down and the dust set~
tied it was found that considerable
damage had been done, though for
tunately no. one was injured.
Frederick McMahon's parlor was
wrecked by masses of rock which
shattered; tho windows and destroyed
the furniture. so that the interior

ploded within. A large piece of rock
went through the side of Harry Hub-
bell's residence in Spring street. an—
