Mead and family were induced to live
in Burton, in the west part of the
town. The depot at. that time was a
flag station, known as Lockwood's
Corners, and the post.~oflico for that
part. of the town was Durieu, willie the
easterly post-office was called Darien
depot. it was in the house of Lewis
Clock and his sisters Catherine and
Eliza Clock, that the Mead faintly
summer-ed for parts of three years, at~
tending, with Mr. Clock's faintly, Mr.
Burnett‘s church. and also a chapel
near the Clock residence, which after.
wards became the First Presbyterian
Church. now on what was then part
of the clock property. During these
years of recruiting of volunteers for
preservation of the union, Mr. Mead
witnessed the enthuséasm of the
young men of Darlen or their coun-
try, embracing sometimes nearly all
the sons of families, like the Hobbys,
Clocks and Whltueys. in 1864, Mr.
Mead moved into the property. armor
of Mansfield and Sedgwlck avenues,
occupying this residence both summer
and winter. The property was then
owned by Mr. Johnson, of whom Mr.
Mead purchased it for 85,500, and be-
gan improvements to lawn and out-
buildings, as well as the dwelling.

ed to push the New Canaan road di-

was taken from Holy Bell and part
from Mr. Mead. and so favorably was
this improvement considered by the
latter that he donated the value of this
