to do with the alleged determination
of Mr. Todd to alter the character of
his duties with the company.

Mr. Todd told a friend. Saturday
that after June 1 he would haVe no
connection with the operating depart
ment of the railroad His present so-
thorny giveh hi the general supervl
sion of the who system, and of the
transportation department of all rail
lines. This covors both trafiic and of)-
eratlon the same as was handled by
former Vice-President Merrill.

as to whom Mr. Todd' s successor will
be. in the event of his leaving his pres-

The Russian naval defect was inter-
preted there as making for early
peace. Three classes of Japanese gov.
ernment issues ar‘e dealt in on the
New York Stock Exchange. Bankers‘
certificates for the four and a hall
per cent bonds opened 4 1-2 highcl
than Saturday and then reacted 1 1-4
on realizing. Certificates for the sixes
second rose 3—8 and the first series
sixes 1 3-4. Leading international
stotks and industrials opened l to. ‘-’
points higher than Saturday. The de—
mand proved dull at these advances

The advance in Union Pacific and Ca

Japanese bonds. Railroad and mis-
celaneous bonds were dull and steady.
