SUNDAY 'BASE BALL.
This subject has been much in the
minds of our townspeople during the
last few days. The protest of public
sentiment expressed in resolutions
passed by church officials of the town
has been heeded. and the management.
at Roton Point states that profession-
al Sunday ball will not be played. No
doubt many are disappointed. and the
churches and pastors are the subject
of considerable criticism. This, how-
ever, is not to the discredit of the
churches necessarily, for any aggres-
sive movement provokes opposition,
and aggresivia morality provokes more
than any other kind. This at least
should be said for the churches. they
have the law on their side. The sta
tute by its letter. its spirit and its in
terpretation plainly forbids money-
making baseball on Sunday. This is
true not only of Connecticut, but of
New York State. On Tuesday of this
week Police Commissioner McAdoo
received an opinion from Corporation
Counsel Delany to the effect that pro-
fessional baseball on Sunday was iile
gal, and that arrests should be made
without warrants. . The Conlmlssionei
proposes to enforce the law, and is re-
ported as assuming an attitude which
is commendable in any public official.
He says, “Without regard to what my
own personal feelings may be on this
subject. either froiu a moral, religious
or legal standpoint, I will act upon
the advice given me by the Corporation
Counsel, and will order the police to
suppress Sunday baseball." Those
who believe in Sunday baseball, can
' on the other hand. plead tllut the law
is unjust. This plea. however, has
not been accepted by our Legislature,
for when it had the opportunity to
amend the law last winter it refused.
It then it be claimed that our Legisla-
tures are too nluch under the inilu~
ences of the churches and too indif-
ferent to the need of recreation and
outdoor sport which marks our hard‘
working people, such a claim simply
cannot be substantiated by the facts.
as anyone lnust know who is at all
observant of our American life. The
lovers of Sunday baseball may charge
the church people with too great con-
cern about the way men spend their
Sundays, but they surely will not be
ready to condemn those who desire to
see the laws of our land enforced. Re.
gard for law must be a cardinal vir-
ture with that republic which hules
to endure. Mistakes will be made in
creating laws, offence will be caused
to many by the existence of some
laws. differences of opinion must he-
cessarily abound in a land of free
thought, as to the wisdom of much of
our legislation, but whatever else we
do or do not. we must train ourselves
to respect the laws of the land and
seek their enforcement at whatever
personal sacrifice. or else government
of the people, for the people and by
the people will surely perish from our
portion of the earth.
