Perry Sanford. the oldest colored pion-
eer citizen of this city and an old Ken.
lucky slave. hlsiaitempted to commit
suicide in a hospital by cutting his
throat with a iackkuil’e. Five months
ago Sanford became paralyzed on his
right side. and was taken to the hos-
pital. it took him an hour to open his
knife with his left hand and his teeth.
He probably will die! Sanford s the
last surviving witness of the invasion
of this state in 1848 by armed Kenv
ituckeuians who forcibly attempted to
capture a fugitive slave at the famous
Quaker settlement in Cass County.
the failure of this invasion and the
subsequent excitement throughout the
Southern states resulted in the. pass-
age of the fugitive slave law by Con-
grass.
