He was a graduate of Michigan Uni
versity. For a time before the Civil
War, he practised law in Michigan. Al‘-
ter his war service was ended. in 1866
he entered the insurance business as
an agent at Pittafield, Mass. later he
became secretary of the Berkshire Life
insurance Company in Pittsfleld and
in 1870 he came to Hartrord and be
gun as assistant secretary his connec-
tion with the Connecticut Mutual Life
Insurance Company
His career as a soldier was distin
Knished. He enlisted at the opening
of the war as a private, but for merit-
orious conduct he was promoted rapid-
ly through many grades, reaching the
rank of colonel
His death occurred at 7: 30 this
