CHICAGO, August 10.-Stepa look-
ing to a settlement. of the stock yards
strike are to be initiated at a confer-
ence between the Retail Meat Dealers'
Association of Chicago and the Market
Wagon Drivers' Union. according to re.
ports that reached the packing house
teamstera today. Vice-President Raff
of the union said a meeting was plan-
ned between the retail butchers and
the market drivers last night, btit the
meeting of the teamsters Joint council
session interfered with the arrange-
ment.
Extension of the picket lines about
wholesale and retail markets was also
promised by uiilon officials. A confer.
ence of the leaders was held and plans
were made to shut off fee and meat
from all establishments patronizing
the big packers.
‘ Despite all efforts of commission
men today’s receipts of live stock were
so heavy as to nstonish the packers.
There were 23.000 cattle: 25.000 hogs
and 15.000 sheep. With the New
York packing plants closed by the.
strike, the disposal of all the receipts
was admitted to be a difficult problem,

may cease as the result of an accident
that. caused the cancellation of a pro-
gram of three bouts last, night. The
ring was pitched in the interior of the
stocks yards on Packcrs' Avenue, near
West. 43rd street. Daniel Smith, em-
ploycd by Morris and Company, was
pitted against Peter Ford. Both men
are colored. Smith struck Ford on the
head with such force that Smith's arm
was shattered and the program was de-
clared off. The police are said to have
been given orders to prevent, any fur.

the ultimatum given the packers by the
Amalgamated Beef Cutters‘ and Dutch-
er Workmen that a general strike
would go into effect today the order
became operative at the time set this
morning. The plants affected . are
those affiliated with the BO-cillled “beef
trust."
A difference of opinion exists already
as to the number of men on strike: the
union opinion being that the strike is
complete,‘ while the packers state that
only about fifty per cent. of the men
have left. and that these places will he
quickly filled.
President Blumenlhal, of the United
Dressed Beef Company. said flint only
about fifty per cent, of. the men had
quit work on his establishment. The
firm employs about six hundred reuu»
larly. and he said 800 of them reported
for work today. The 300 that left he
said included all the cattle butchers

claims to have about a month’s supply
of beef in the refrigerators; Until'thls
supply is about exhausted, President
Blumenthal said there would be no
raise in prices.
