It must be admitted, over a report which has gained a Wide circu- lation during the past two days, rela- tive to a “deal" which it Is said, is being arranged whereby the Wheeler & Wilson band can remain the Third Regiment band. and yet can escape that trip to hianassao. Va., which the musicians are so anxious to cut out of their fall work. The alleged ar- rangement ls decidedly discreditsble to the band which. rumor says. has look- ed favorably upon it, says the Bridge- port Standard it will he remembered that some lit- tle while ago, when the Manassas idea was first broached here certain mem- bers of the Wheeler & Wilson band objected seriously to taking the trip on the ground that it would come dur- ing their busy season. The matter was talked on extensively amen the bandmcn with the result that the Iarge majority of them applied for a dis- charge from their enlistment. under the three years service rule which pro- vides that banllmen shall receive hon- orary discharges upon application af- ter three years of service. Now. it would seem, the band is regretfui of its action. The discharges sought, however. were granted, so the matter is too late to mend in the regular way. Accord- ing to the talk at the present time the plan is to recommend to Col. Fitch some aggregation of musicians which the Wheeler J: Wilson players are con- fldent cannot fill the bill at Manassas. with the result that Col. Fitch with the other ollcers of the regiment will return to Connecticut thoroughly dis- gusted. Then, according to the al- leged plan, the Wheeler J: Wilson band will step forward. and in order that the. Third regiment may not be with- out satisfactory music, will volunteer to re-enlist. in that way the band will escssio the Manassas trip‘and yet will remain the regimental band. Whether the musicians of the bard which. so the story goes. have been se- lected as the cat’s paw, know it or not. is a question. but the statement was made on the street today that the Wheeler & Wilson musicians are booming the stock of the Philharmonic band for all it is worth. while, at the some time, they are laughing quietly at the little coup they have prepared.
