Tire water supply of the city of Chester Ih‘ taken from the Delaware river. and is contaminated by the sewage of Phlladtlpbla and a num- her or other cities which are situated on the river above Chester. The water is raised from 1111 rl\"ei by drums of large pumps and taken to the top of a high hilt near Chester. There it is pumped into eight different mechani- cal filters. which consist of tanks about fifteen feet in diameter and eight feet deep. At the bottom of these tanks la a layer of crushed stone anti above the crushed stone Is a layer of sand about three feet deep. The water percolates through this and runs into a settling basin which is the former reservoir of the city. The sand takes otrt the great- er part of the vegetable matter from tln- water. Alum is then added, the amount of alum needed varying with the turbidity of the water from half to two grains of alum per gallon. ’l‘hhs causes coagulation and settlement or the water“. It is stated that the addi— tion of the alum has no bad effect on the water, and is hardly noticeable. These filters need to be cleaned quite , or‘tcn, sometimes every day. is the wat- er is very turbid. This cleaning of the sand inside the filter is done- by means of revolving tubes which extend down into the sand. and which send water right down into it. The dirty water runs over the top of the filter and is carried away. When “ this has been done the filter is again . ready for use. l-‘rom'these eight tanks, the city de- rives about four million gallons or iii- tered water per day, and is now the“ ring the number of tanks to get a daily supply ~of eight million Kahuna.
