BENNETT MANSION BURNS.
Owner Asks New York Police to Make

NEW YORK, Dec. 28.—The Bennett
mansion. in the southern portion of
Brooklyn, was burned to the ground to-
day. Charles Bcnnt-it has asked the
Fort Hamilton police to investigate the
cause of the fire.
The mansion was one of the largest
and most costly buildings overlooking
the Narrows. Charles A’. Moss, a bank-
er. vacated it December 1. and since
then the house has been unoccupied.
While the firemen were thawing out
the fire hydrants. the building burned
to the foundation stones. The damage
to house and furnishings is 825.000.

arrest was made on the Boston ex-
press due in Stamford st 1. 85.
A request was sent by the Bridge-
port police to Acting Chief Brennan
to intercept Wood a description of
whom was given. Policemen Heifer-
nsn and Lunacy and Special Police-
man Schock went down to the train
when it reached Stamford 0dicer
Schock found the man in the last seat
but one of the last car. Had Schools
not been particularly keen. Wood might
off. and his face was partly covered
“Mi, Wood?" said Schock. at a ven-
taro and the man looked up. “There
is a man on the platform who would
like to see you," continued Schock. The
mining engineer stepped out upon the
platform of the train. and saw Heifer-
nan. ' He did not seem disposed to
leave the car. but Schock gave him a
little assistance and the train went
off. Wood was taken to police head-
quarters. After he inquired the reason
for his arrest he seemed relieved to

He has spent considerable time at
