He was president of the Bard of Education of New York city in 1858, president of the Park Board from 1867 to 1870 and Comptroller of New York city from 1871 to 1876. 'I‘Ilden and other prominent men, and In state af- fairs had been president and com- missioners of the New York state res- ervation at Niagara Falls since 1883 and was a delegate to the constitution- al convention In 1894. Five shots were fired at Mr. Green, four of which took ef- fect. ’ Williams had been a furnace tender at the house where Mr. Green lived. and was standing in the doorway with bishand behind him when Mr. Green edmany years. The body fell with Its head resting against the front railing. A niece of Mr. Green ran out of the house and shouted in anger at the negro, who sneel-od at her. Then she took Mr. Green's head In her lap and screamed for help. The two nieces of Mr. Green are In a serious condition from shock. At the station Williams described the shooting, saying: "I 'walked up to Green and asked him why he kept heaping slander upon me. He turned to go away and then I shot him. i may not be Justified in the eyes of man for this deed, but I am sure I am justified in the eyes of God." The negro said that he has tried re— pesoiy to find the Davis woman and when asked his reason. replied: “Be- cause I want to cut her tongue out." When Mayor Low heard of Mr. Green's death, he ordered the flag on the City Hedi to be put at hlfif mast and said: “The killing of Mr. Green Is a public calamity.
