The three young men attempted the
feat of climbing to the Summit of the
rock by following rifts on the face. in-
stead of following the broad riding
path laid out by the park department
or the flight of natural stairs which
runs along one face of the rock. The
climbers were in single file. Sherman
in the rear. A fragment of stone was
dislodged from above and this struck
Sherman. causing him to loosen his
hold on a projection and to fall to the
ground forty feet below. He was un-
conscious when reached by the others
and his condition did not at any time
give promise of recovery.
