NEW YORK, Sept. lit—Congressman
George B. McClellan, who has been
spoken of frequently during the last
month as a probable candidate for
mayor of New York on the Democratic
ticket and who arrived here today from
lumps, was interviewed at the steam-
ship pier on the local political situa-
tion. lie was told by a reporter that
Comptroller Grout had said that nation-
al polities should not be considered In
a municipal election, and in reply Mr.
McClellan said:
"On general principles 1 cannot see
how you can divorce local politics from
national affairs any more than you can
' from state attain. They make up the
politics of the nation and there can
be no such thing as a non-partisan city
election. "

oyster growers saved them thousands
of dollars in the heavy storms this sea-
son. Oyster dealers around New Ha-
ven were not so fortunate. however.
and the loss to the New Haven dealers
during the heavy storm is estimated
a 8100. 000. .
be local growers appreciating the
fact that storms such as that of the
past week are liable to happen at any
time. have adopted the policy of plant-
ing very few oysters in shoal waters
lilven in sheltered spots they seldom
plant in water less than six feet deep at
:ow tide. in the open Sound they plant
a water ranging from four to twelve
fathoma. This saves the beds in all
ordinary storms. The New Haven
dealers on the contrary have been In
he habit of planting their oysters in
very shoal water which would be al~
most bare at low tide.
