ter the 5:15 train had pulled in at that
place two spirited horses, attached to
an open carriage waiting at the sta-
tion. took fright and bolted as the
Winsted express whirled by on the
center track. The occupant of the car-
riage. whose coolness and bravery un-
der the trying circumstances won for
her the admiration of all present. was
Mrs. Samuel Richards Weed, wife of a
prominent citizen residing in Brook-
side, about a mile from the depot. She
had come down to meet her husband.
who was on his way/from New York.
and the fact that she is nowallve and
not even seriously injured, is certain-
ly remarkable.

The Gypsy Entertainment given by
the Epworth League of the East Ave-
nue Methodist Church. last evealng
at the home of ill. E. Keefer, was a
great success and the attendance was

The affair was held on the lawn out-
side tbe house. A stage was one
there for the performance. The lit»
tings of the stage were those of a
gypsy camp. and the chamtera were
garbed after the fashion of the dark
faced wandersrs.
Charles Hill took the part 6: "The
Yankee Paddler; Miss Carrie Carpen-
ter was the groom and Miss Crab Mal
King was as the bride. The couple go
to the gypsy camp to have their fortune
told and while there one of the gypsy!
sang “The Gypsy’s Waning." This
was done by Miss Clara Ainsworth.
After the close of the performance

There is every source of encourage-
ment in the way that the public schools
in South Norwalk have opened. The
first remarkable thing was that every
teacher of the corps was able to be at
her post when the schools opened and
already for the arduous work of the
fall and winter term. Little time was
lost in organizing and they all were
right down to business at the start.
At the Franklin School, tirade it. in
charge of Miss Zorn, is recruited from
another room. The Franklin kinder-
garten has been transferred to Arion
Hall. The children taken from the Ar-
lon kindergarten have been organized
into a primary grade at tue Concord

Loekwood's Hail Filled With an Ap-
clative Audience, Which, Enjoyed
the Program.
A fair sized audience attended the
production of “The Huskln' Bee,"
which was held last evening at Lock-
wood's Hall, under the auspices of the
Catholic Club.
it had been planned originally to
hold a two night’s lawn fete at the
Catholic Club House in West avenue,
but owing to the lnclemency of the
weather it was found necessary at that
time to postpone it. Lockwood's hall
was chosen for the affair. The stage
was small and very poorly adapted to
the work. Notwithstanding this fact.
the production was well put on and
the characters took their parts in a
most natural and easy manner. The
program was practically the same as
that given at the Catholic Club with
the exception that the opening piece
was “The Naiads," a costume dance
given by a number of little girls clad
in green and carrying hoops of flow-
ers. The specialties introduced all
went well and everyone was pleased.
At the close of the performance, ice
cream and other refreshments were
served. Jesse's orchestra furnished
music for dancing, which was highly
enjoyed.

Trolley Car And in Front of Horse.
Mrs. Brown. an aged lady wiio re-
sides in Rowan street East Norwalk,
met with a_ painful accident yesterday
afternoon, in West avenue, South
Norwalk She was waiting for a trol-
ley car and stepping out of the way
of one stepped right in front of a car-
riage in which was a man. The horse
was going at a fair rate of speed, and
the driver did not see Mrs Brown
soon enough to prevent running over
her. She was knocked down, but the
horse did not step on her, The driver
of the team. so an eye witness stated
did not stop to ascertain what injuries
had been caused, but drove on.
Mrs. Brown was assisted to her feet.
it was found that she was suffering
considerably from shock and had sus-
tained several painful cuts on the
houses while people are at church on
Sundays. was before the court. The
case crimes from Stamford, where, it
was explained, the man was put off
a train. in his possession were false
keys and other paraphernalia used by
criminal parasites. State Attorncy
Fessendon thought that the sentence
should be severe. In consequence of
the circumstances surrounding the
theft, Judge Gager sentenced Mchll
to not less than 18 months nor more
than two years in the state prison.
