The burning of a “fireproof" building
in Manhattan recently. reminded me of
an incident of a fire in Chicago several
years ago. The flames originated in a
butt] and were soon communicated to
an adjoining wooden building. which
was consumed In 'an lnconccivably
short time.

It afterward transpired that this was

hand grenade to be thrown upon
flames for their extinguishment. He
had spent practically his all on the
manufacture of these "extinguishers"
and stored them in this fated building
to await shipment to his sales agents.
