fraction higher than last night. There
were 1.500 shows of United States
Steel sold at 23% and 231/3. compared
with 23%. last night, and the price aub-
sequcntly ran to 23%. The preferred
stock advanced 1%. Rock Island pre-
ferred gained 1%. General Electric a
point. and a number of the standard
railroad stocks a large fraction.

gre demand or stocks was not. antit-
clcnt to sustain prices and the open-
ing gains were. quite generally cancel-
led. Leaders such as Reading. the Pa-
