NEW LONDON. June 23—lt was
learned today that a force of about
200 men In at work at the plant of
the Eastern Shipbuilding Company,
which closed two weeks ago, after no-
tice was given that Its 1,700 employee
would demand a 9-hour day with ten
hours' pay. About all of the men who
have returned are laborfir’s out there
are enough skilled craftsmen among
them to resume work on the big ships.

tive committee of the Amalgamated
Association of Street Railway Em-
ployes of America. returned here last
evening, after an absence of a month.
He declined today to discuss the street
railway strike situation here more
than superficially as he said he uad
not had an opportunity to secure de
tails. He expressed confluence in the
probability of a settlement of the
strike. basing It on the company's loss
of patronage,
Mr, Dilworth said that since leaving
here, a few days after the strike was
Inaugurated he had settled strikes In

FISH FROM ALL WATERS.
interesting Exhibits in the Fish and
.Glms Building.
The forestry. fish and game building
at the world's fair. stands west of the
French National reservation, 800 feet
west of Skinker road and 100 feet
south of Forsythe avenue. The build-
ing is on a terrace five feet high. and
is reached by broad stretches of or-
nate stairs on either side. The struc-
ture Is 300 feet by 60 feet. '
The fish tanks are constructed on
the east side of the building. These
vary In length from 6 to 11 feet. With-
in the building west of the aquariums,
is a pool 25 feet wide by 50 feet long.

will swim in the crystal water In the
pool and their movements may be ob-
served from the bridge.
West of the pool are four ponds 20
by 60 feet. The banks of these are
bordered with masses of rock, stretch-

Marine Corps tells a good story illus-
trating the wit of one of the marines
under his command in Samar. This
particular marine was an lrlshman.
who never failed to have an apt reply
ready for any occasion. The marines
were cutting their way through some
very tough undergrowth. which called
Into play all of the athletic training of
the Americans. The marine in his en-
deavors to get through the under
growth had been executing a series of
evolutions never met with under any
other conditions. Finally. as there
were suspicious noises ahead, Major
Waller ordered him to climb a tree
and see if he could make out anything
ahead. This order was compiled with.
but not without a protest.
“I don't mind enlisting for a Rocky
mountain goat." protested the marine,
“But l'll be dumbed if i thought i was
enlisted for a bird."
But he flew up the tree as readily
as if he had had wings, and was soon
down again to report what he had seen
in his flying trip.

Representative Dalaaii, of Pennsyl-
vania, enjoys telling of an Inctuent in
which he figured together with the late
President McKinley, in Pittsburg. on
the occasion when Pennsylvania troops
were in that city, directly after their
return to this country from the Philip-
pines. On that occasion both the Pros
ident and Mr, Dalsell were on the pro.-
gram for speeches. Mr. Dalzell was
perceptibly wrought up to a state of
uneasiness. President McKinley no-
ticed his discomforture and inquired
as to the cause at it.
“I suppose," replied the Pennsylvan-
Ia representative, "It Is because I have
to make a speech here today.”
“0h!" replied Mr McKinley very
promptly, ‘I am in the same predica-
ment, but I am not troubled. You see
