Myytlc Girl Won Cleaning Gun When
. Weapon Discharged
MYSTIC, Conn. May 2.——Ruby M.
Mitchell, aged 14 years. a daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Edward H. Mitchell. oi
Mason's Island. dccidentaily shot her-
self in the abdomen this morning about
7:40 ofclock while cleaning her father's
gun. She died instantly. Dr.
George B. Stanton. of Stonlngton.
medical examiner for the town. went
to Mason’s island this morning and in-
vestigated the shooting. The story
told the medical examiner
clearly that it we an accident; There
are four guns In the house. The girl
was in the habit of keeping them clean.
She. took the weapon with which she
shot herself—~a single barrel—Hind
Went to her room in an upper story
and started t clean it. Evidently she
did not kn w it, was loaded. Mrs.
Mitchell. the mother of the unfortunate
girl heard the shot and sprang upstairs
to the room where her daughter was.
She. found her lying across the bed
with a bullet hole in her abdomen. it
was stated that the girl had commit-
ted suicide. but the friends of the fami-
ly scout thfs idea. The nirl was hle'h.
Iv respected and this morning was in
the best of spirits. There are but
eight families on the island. About
