DIVIIION OF THE TOWN.
'The town division issue was made of
extra Interest yesterday by the report
that the Legislative Committee, by a
,_ nagalmoua vote of thc members In
executive session, had decided to
report favorably on the petition to di-
vide the town, and to make South Nor-
55 walk, East Norwalk, Five Mile River
and Middle Five Mile RIVcr the new
town of South Norwalk.
The committee with one exception,
were all present at the meeting The
eight were agreed and, it is believed
I' that the member absent will coincide
with the others. and that a unanimous
report will be presented to the House
next Tuesday, and that probably the
bill will be put on its passage the Fri-
day following.
From the best sources the Informa-
tion is that the bill will pass both
houses of the Legislature with very
~ little opposition.
The committee having this matter
. under consideration gave careful at-
tention at the hearing, and have since ‘
visited the town and looked over the
situation. Their report must, there-
fore, have great. weight. with the Le;-
ialature. .In fact, the general senti-
ment at Hartford seems to favor di-
' vision. Although the matter is not
fully settled yet, It is highly probable
that it soon will be. and that Nor-walk
and South Not-walk will be separate
towns.

personal knowledge obtained by

James Henry Wood. of 01 Rid
Daricn. died last night at the Norwalk
Hospital. after a protracted Illness.
Death was due to a complication of dia-
eascs. superinduccd by an attack of the
grip. He was about seventy eight years
£30. Two children survive him.
muol Wood of Dorian, and Miss Bet-
se‘y Weed, of South Nor5walit. He had
two sisters and one brother living.
They are Mrs Susan Street, of Ilaricn,
and Mrs. James I. Matthews. of River
bank and Harvey Weed of Norotou.
Mr. Weed was a ship carpenter by
trade and always lived in Darien, which
was his birthplace During the Civil
War he was employed in building many
of the ships which constituted the Uni-
ted States navy at that time. He was
vary well known in these parts and
was a general favorite on account of
his even temperament and kindly
ways, His 'death is deeply regretted
by all who knew him, The funeral will
be held from the home of Henry 0.
Street. Darlen, Sunday, at 2 o'clock.
Rev. John L, Brooks. pastor of the
Methodist Church in Darien, will ofiiv
-ciate. The Interment will be in 0x
Ridge cemetery.
MRS. EMMA BALDWIN.
Miss Emma Baldwin died. after a
protracted illness. Tuesday. at. the
residence of her sister. Mrs. W. H. Rey-
nolds, Hedtord Station, N. Y.. aged 55
years. She leaves a daughter. Miss
Claru E. Baldwin. The funeral was
held yesterday at 3 p. In. from the real-
dence of her sister. interment was In
New Canaan, in the family plot. today,
on the arrival of the 12:10 train. The
Baldwin, well known as a teacher In
this city, who died August 9. 190), in
Saratoga. where he was,spendlng the
summer in the hope that his health
would be benefitted,

port. it. 1., died of penumonia. on Sat-
urday last. February 14th, at the home

WASHINGTON. Feb. 20.--When the,
Senate met at It a. tn. today It was
still the executive day of yesterday. a
recess having been taken last night un-
til this morning. The proceedings
were still behind closed doors.
Immediately after the Senate was
called to order the point that no quor-
um waa present was made and thel
senators hurried in item the commit-l
tee rooms.
A quorum Ioon responded and the]
Panama canal treaty was immediately
laid before the Senate. Senator Mor-
gan yielded the floor to Senator Bur- |
ton, (Kasn) republican. an advocate of'
the omnibus statehood bill. He spoke I
especially of the importance of the
passage of that measure, only Indirect-
ly referring to the treaty. His conten-
,tion was that while the canal treaty‘
might be a meritorius measure. the,
statehood bill fas equally six and
