MANY KILLED IN ONTARIO
Pacific Express and Grand Trunk
Freight Trains in a Collision.
LONDON, Ont. Dec. 27—A terrible
accident occurred last night at Wan-
stand. a station on the Sarnia branch
of the Grand Trunk Railroad. it was
a head-on collision between the Pacific
express, No. 5, and an east-bound
freight. The express was proceeding
west at its usual high rate of speed.
The freight was under slow headway
and was to how: taken the switch at
Wanstcad to allow the. passenger train
to pass. Apparently neither engineer
saw the danger ahead ‘in time to avoid
the accident, for the 1110 engines came
together near the west switch with a
frightful crash. overturning into the
ditch. The baggage and express cars
‘telescoped" Into the smoker, with up:
pulling results. The. wreck was com-
plcie and it is thought that hardly a.
single passenger lathe smoker escap«
ed injury. The other cars of the pas-
senger train remained an the track.
As soon as the accident occurred
word was. sent to this city and doctors
were soon on the scene. The work of.
removing the dead and injured was
then proceeded with.
Among the known dead are: Engin<
oer Gillies, of Sarnia ’I‘unncll. and the

One of the. passengers describes the.
accident as follows: We were running
at about 40 miles an hour when, with
out the slighttst warning the two trains
met with terrific force. The two en-
gines were hurled Into the ditch. The
baggage car was thrown on top of the
first-class coach. instantly killing a
great many passengers and pinning
down about 50 others I11 the debris.
The screams. moans and prayers of the
injured were heartrcndlng. One poor
woman bogged that her child be saved
as she, was dying. The little thing was
carefully taken from the wreck and
will likely recover. The mother was
later released and taken to another
car. but only to die in 11 few minutes.
One woman died singing "Nearer My
God to Then." while another died in
her husband's arms. singing “Jesus
Lover of My Soul."
About 30 people were killed and for-
ty badly injured, some of whom will
die.

senger. did all they could to rcilevo the
sufferings of the victims. The ilHatcd
express consisted of two baggage cars,
a smoker, two first class coaches and
two Pullmnns The smoker was tele-
scoped by the coach behind it. The
sides were knocked out of it and the
roof fell In and i111priaoncd tho passen-
gers. It was in this car that most of
the loan of life occurred.
The wreck caught fire and but for
the heroic efforts of passengers. organ-
ized and led by an old man, also a
passenger. the disaster might have
been even more terrible. Three or-
gltnlzed passengers put out the fire by
throwing snow on the flames with their
hats and hands. They then devoted
their efforts to getting out the wound-
ed. whose sufferings were increased by
a blinding snow norm and almost zero
weather.
A Miss (‘ulberisom of Port Huron.
Mich. was Imprisoned under the
wreck two hours. but was not seriously
injured. The nccidcut is said to have
been due lo the failure of an operator
to give orders to the express lraln to
meet. the freight at the station.
