The outlook for the oyster set this
season is very dubious, says the New
Haven Union. The set should have
made its appearance by August 15, and
at this time almost three Weeks later.
the sprinkling of small oysters is very
sparse. it is now too late to make a
set. and so the crop which should have
been started this‘senson and maturing
two or three years hence, may be xxald
to be practically a failure.
This is a great disappointment to
the oyster planters not only at this
vicinity, but of nearly all of the Sound
ports Many thousands of dollars have
been expended in putting down shells
to receive a possible net. The plant
‘ of shells. gravel and other material in
Long Island Sound has aggregated
hundreds at thousands of bushels and
this effort really goes for nothing
Great shell piles which have been no
completing on the trimmer: near the
oyster houses (or the past year. have
» been taken on been out into the Sound

large outlay, but the oystermen have
to take their chanoes in the matter of
