Decker was damaged to the extent of several thousand dollars and the steanrer Vindex sustained slight injury yester- day morning between 2 and 3 o‘clock. as the result of a hot fire which start- ed in the first-named vessel. Both boats are owned by Captain I’eter Decker. the well-known oyster planter. and were moored to his dock. at the east side of the harbor. The Freddie W. Decker was close to the .dock and the Vindex was alongside of her. The fire started (in board the Deck- or and was discovered shortly before 2 o'clock by one of the night rrren 0n the New York. New Haven and Hart- ford Railroad Company's drawbridge. He sounded several sharp blasts on the whistle, which was heard near the center, and Officer Walter llall turned in an alarm from Box 3. Just at this time Br‘idgeterrder John Cole. who was aroused by the whistle. sent in an alarm from Box 52. on the Washington street bridge. The firemen responded promptly and it was found necessary to attach the hose to the hydrant at the corner of Washington and Water streets, and carry it across the bridge. down the steps to Malmo‘s float. where six nrem. bers of the department, under the di- rection to Chief Engineer D. W. liar- ford. entered two of the boats. Oars were secured from the recur under the cafe, and the hose was finally taken as close as possible to the burning steamer.
