Ha Believes the High School Should

Mr. Editor: As the school meeting
on Tuesday will consider the offering
to the Board of School Visitors of ac-
commodations to secure the retention
of our present high school department
within South Norwalk it may be well
to consider what‘ our; high school con-
tributes to this community in ‘return
for its cost“. small, very small. com—
pared to the total school expense.
First, excellent school faclli es are
a potent factor to influence pe pie to.
make our city their home. That city
that can afford excellent educational
advantages is sought out for a home.
A desirable class of home seekers is
thus secured. Real estatg values are
increased because there is a demand for
property. Can South Norwalk afford
to rob itself of this? From lack of
these facilities. growth in population is
lost. Our neighbors giving these ad
vantages, outstrip us
Second our high school gives acad-
emlc training to a large number who
return to the com unity as teachers.

comes from locally educated girls. Is
not the high standing of our city
schools due to the excellent scholar-
ship that is the fruitage of our own lo-
' cal high school? Our children in every
grade of the public schools are better;
educated in proportion to the higher
education of their teachers. \Were no
other consideration weighed, this argue

secure, even at a sacrifice. a higher

own school gives those pursuing it?
The high school exerts a powerful
stimulus for good upon the depart-
ments below. It appeals to the ambi-
tion of the young. it holds the young
up to scholarly endeavor. Shall opt all
these considerations weigh in scour:

too meagre to secure reputable results?
