The trouble at the Philadelphia
Steamship Cempanys dock brought a
crisis not unexpected 11nd just befme
noon President John J Ryan. of the
lionuhoremen' s Union. ordered a gen-
eral strike of all longshoremcn and
freight handlers employed by tho va1-_
ious coastwise steamship companies
having terminals in this city. Presi-
dent Ryan’s order effects about 2,500
men and brings the total number of
strikers up to 11,500. As‘ a result of
this strike the George G. Page Box
Company. at Cambridgcport. was forc-
ed to close down at noon. throwing/125
men out of employment. The shut
down is for an indefinite.1 period. and is
due to the action of nine of the com-
pany's teamstcrs. who left hcir wag-
ons. The John P. Squires ncklug cs-
tablishment, it is believed, also will be
forced to close down as its teamsters

support extended to American stocks
in the London market had a strength-
suing effect on the local dealings at
the opening and there was no trace of
yesterday's late selling movement. in-
ten national stocks showed fractional
improvements. particularly Pennsyl-
vanla and St. Paul. Colorado and
Southern and Manhattan were pushed
up sharply,.b11t. Reading showed heavi-
ness 'on apprehension regarding the
labor outlook. The general market was
quite active and decidedly firm.
WALL STREET 1 p. m.N-——The gen-
eral market; was practically inert and
only obscure specialties moved. Amer-
ican Cotton Oil aided 1% and the pre-
ferred 2 and exlcan Central rose a
point. There was a. drop of 6V; in
Minneapolis, St. Paul and Sault Ste.

preferred, Manhattan Beach. American
Snuff. American Smelting preferred,

HARTFORD March 11—As a result
of the vmlous conference of the dele
gates held today prior to the opening
of the eleventh week of the constitu-
tional convention it is believed that

and sixty plan of representation in
the house and senate and some com-
mon ground of agreement may be
reached before the week is over,
Perhaps the most important confer
ence of the three held this morning
was that of the country delegates on

There were fifty delegates present and
they voted almost unanimously to on

offered last week from Southlngton
