rapidly filling with smoke and for a
time dropped their hose and hurried
through .eVery portion of the building
in search of guests who might have
been oyercome by smoke Their search
was rewarded for on nearly every floor ~.
and in the hallways scores ‘of persons '-
were found whorlind been overcome 'n
in their efforts to recoil the open air
Hospital records- show that twency- ‘
six persons were taken to the New 3
York and Bellevuc institutions. Nearly
double that-number were injured in
their panic—stricken endeavors to esc-
cape. and were given medical aid on
the spot. or the scores taken from
the window of the third fourth and
fifth floors many were slightly burned
and were hysterical froin shock.
