When Mrs. Smith took the witness
stand in court on Monday morning and
refused to answer questions relative to
the whereabouts of $300,000 to govern-
ment bonds which she says she owns,
she was warned that unless she an-
swered-the court would have no dis-
cretion but to send her to jail for con-
tompt. At noon yesterday, although

nor the judgment paid and although
the warning has been twice repeated.
Mrs. Smith was at liberty and still re-
tained the knowledge which she rev

The most patient of arguments. the

tory solution of the problem," said
Attorney Foster on Wednesday even

will furnish the second case in the
person of Mrs. Smith is a question. it
may be an absolutely necessary step
in carrying out the decrees of justice.
but it will not be taken until every
other means has failed. Both Judge
Curtis and Mr. Foster have given an
exhibition of” respect and patience
which has added greatly to the regard
in which the court is hold. '
A possible complication is added to
the case by the fact that Judge Curtis
yesterday. at the short calendar ses-
sion of the court. granted a judgment
to Swan 11 Bushnell against Mrs.
Smith on a note for $250 gi'ven March
