giving details at the tire, says:
Fire broke out at the bottom at level
bio. 8, and was communicated across
the. slope by one of the curtain. in
hall an hour the whole slope was on
tire. Rescuers flocked to the mine
and reached the place where the min-
ors had been at work. but the men had
gone. They had run with the trail
air instead of against it in an attempt
to get out by the accustomed route,
thus meeting death halt way. While
the rescuers were at work several ex-
plosions occurred. When it was re
nilzed that the men could not be saved
a stronger force started to choke the
mine. but thelr'ymrk was undone by a
terrific explosion. which blew down
the barricade. A little later the tan
house was burned.
A corrected list of dead gives sev-
ontoen names. The mine caught me
(mm a pit lamp and twelve men who
entered to subdue the names never
came back. All hope for the men in
the mine has been abandoned. No wat-
er is available and there is no way of
extinguishing the tire. Hundreds or
men will be thrown out of work.
James Thomas, a rope rider. had a
thrilling escape. lie was riding down
the slope. and seeing the tire coming,
lumped oil the. care and ran. George
Bouthcomb and Eugene Griffith. the
timber men. called to him to iollow
them. but he ran on up the slope for
one thousand loot to its mouth and
barely escaped with his lite. The oth-
er men were: overtaken by the flames
